Nick Cunningham – Generation Fate, Director

Nick Cunningham, the founder and director of Generation Fate, Inc., was raised in Placer County and is a graduate of Oakmont High School. He attended the University of California at Santa Cruz where he was a four time Tennis All-American and won three national championships. He graduated from UCSC in 2002 with a degree in Business Management Economics.

Marilyn Edling – Retired, HP

Marilyn Edling retired from Hewlett-Packard in October, 2005. Prior to her retirement, Marilyn held a number of positions over her 16 years at HP, ranging from Vice President of the Enterprise Storage business to WW General Manager for the UNIX server and workstation supply chain. Marilyn joined HP when the company acquired Apollo Computer.

Before joining Apollo Computer, Marilyn reported to the CEO of a privately held manufacturing company and was responsible for strategic planning. Marilyn also has conducted extensive business and financial consulting for Fortune 500 companies. Marilyn currently serves on the board of Rain Bird Corporation, a privately held international sprinkler and irrigation company. She also serves on the Foundation Board for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Marilyn holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University in history; a master’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University; and a master’s degree in business administration from MIT.

Patty Archer-Ward – Director Foster Youth Services, Placer County

Patty Archer-Ward has more than 35 years of experience working with high risk children and their families. She has been with the Placer County Office of Education since 1991, first as the Special Education Teacher with the Juvenile Hall and Alder Grove, a residential court school, then as the Principal and Teacher at the Juvenile Hall for the next nine years. She was the Assistant Administrator for the South Placer Day Reporting Center in the 2000/2001 school year, then promoted to serve in the position of Integrated Services Manager coordinating the Placer County Office of Education’s Foster Youth Services Program and the 26.5 Mental Health Program for the Children’s System of Care. Currently, she holds the position title of Program Manager II and coordinates Foster Youth Services as well as the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education, Title I Neglected, and VII Indian Education Categorical Programs.

Patty holds an Associate’s Degree in Child Development from University of Cincinnati, a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from CSU, Sacramento, and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from National University. She also holds Multiple Subject and Learning Handicapped Teaching Credentials as well as a Professional Administrative Services Credential.

Jason File – Professor, Sierra College

Jason File grew up in Fresno, CA, and went to college at UC San Diego, majoring in European History and Religious Studies. After working as a staff teacher at Fresno Adult School and volunteering with a program that helped gang members get jobs and an education, he then spent three years as an IT Technical Recruiter in Berkeley, CA. Unfulfilled by the business world, he went to graduate school at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he completed his Master's Degree in Ancient Mediterranean Religions (2006). He now lives in Auburn and teaches in the Humanities Department at Sierra College.

Josh Thompson – Apple, Inc.

Josh Thompson came to Sacramento from Colorado where he attended Colorado State University earning a bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems. He since has held various titles with Apple Inc, where today he manages their gifting and rewards program. While working in the fast paced tech world today, Josh's real passion goes to helping others. While he pursues his career aspirations within the tech world, keeping a foot planted in philanthropy early on is what Josh hopes to continue throughout his life.

Samuel Smith - Washington – Student

Samuel Smith-Washington is a 21 one year old former foster youth and is currently attending Sierra College. Sam grew up in the foster care system from age 12 in Tuolumne County. He is studying psychology and will be transferring to Sacramento State University in the fall. He plans to major in psychology or sociology and also obtain a minor in Spanish. He would like to be a counselor for troubled teens. His hobbies are basketball, video games, reading and hanging out with friends.

Scott Cunningham – Apple, Inc

Scott Cunningham, a Sacramento Native, has held various positions with Apple and now manages their business sales team. Scott previously worked as a director at E-Health Insurance and Office Depot’s corporate office in Boca Raton, Florida. His greatest experience lies in team development and management. Scott feels it is important for all members of the community to utilize their skills and resources to give back to those who need our help.
